Shimano Killazilla

Shimano Killazilla
I don't know why it took Shimano three years to bust out this shoe, but maybe it was worth the wait. They claim it's stiffer than it needs to be and that's fine with me. This being Shimano's first step into exoskeleton engineering, it proved a formidable foe to all the top models. If you are willing to throw down for a top of the model shoe, this year's Shimano Killazilla could be for you.

Who the shoe fits: A over-achieving racer who stands somewhere between the Lance's big orange Nikes and the slender and supple Northwaves. The Killazilla combine the better part of many shoes into one that never wants to settle for second. Buckle, straps, why muckle?

Setback: ~$189

Features: Blue leather with fat vented breathability. Two straps leading to a thin-skinned buckle. Thin sole, but burly cleats keep you on your feet, no fuss required. Synthetic purges water well.

Factors: You have to get these things as a present, get sponsored by Shimano or win in the pro class to get your shoe's worth. If you're sportin' these 'zillas, everyone on the race circuit gets to call you Killa for a season.

Tongue 'n Groove: Ya can't count out Shimano for a real performance shoe.
