Half Dome might be the most iconic image of the Sierra Nevada Mountains with credit due to legendary naturalist and photographer Ansel Adams. But how could he not photograph it; this massive granite dome, or half of one, is the starkest feature in all of Yosemite National Park, not an easy task surrounded by gorgeous cascading waterfalls and towering peaks in the valley. If you want to get to the top, you have two options, climb the 1,360-foot face, or hike up the infamous cables – a crowded and sometimes actually pretty sketchy route where you literally hold onto the path’s steel cables as you battle vertigo and exposure for one of the best views in the US. If traditional or aid climbing is more your pace, the wall features a few classic, moderate multi-pitch routes, one that free-soloist and all around wild man, Alex Honnold, climbed unroped. Yes, all 1,360 feet, alone and off belay.
