Mammoth Lakes, California
Originally established as one of the many gold rush pop-up towns in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Mammoth Lakes has evolved into a popular adventure playground. Mammoth Mountain, a volcanic dome that sits defiantly amongst a sea of granitic Sierra peaks, bustles year round with skiers, climbers, mountain bikers, and fly fishermen. The massive ski area, Mammoth Mountain Resort, also lays claim to one of the first downhill mountain bike races, the Kamikaze. When the lifts stop running, many head to Mammoth Village, a chic array of shops and fancy restaurants where those with cash to burn can deck themselves out in the latest fashion or try to outdrink the locals. If crowds aren’t your thing, restore your muscles in one of the many volcanically charged hot springs around Mammoth Lakes. The high country of Yosemite National Park also has an eastern entrance close by that is accessible via Tioga Pass, home to a Mobil gas station that was featured in the New York Times for its fish tacos and mango margaritas. No matter what you get after, Mammoth does not disappoint with something to offer for dirtbags, divas, or anyone in between.
