While few ever see the summit of Mt. Shuksan up close, it is considered one of the most photographed mountains in the world. Many have seen pictures of the mountain without knowing where it is located. Shuksan is in the North Cascades of Washington state near the Mt. Baker volcano. The famous photos of Shuksan are usually taken from Picture Lake where a short loop walking path starts on the Mt Baker Highway. Climbers head out across the Sulphide Glacier to the summit pyramid during the summer months. In early season there is a snow chute to front-point up, but after that the most popular route is a rock climb on the south shoulder. The climb begins at Shannon Ridge Trail at the end of Forest Road 11520 above Baker Lake. Shannon Ridge Trail 742 heads straight up from there to a climbers camp on the ridge. Permits are required and other rules must be followed as this route starts in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and enters North Cascades National Park.
