Iron Mountain, much like neighboring Cone Mountain, is a popular summer hiking spot for folks in Central Oregon. Accessed just as easily from the west and east side, the peak sits right off Highway 20 at Tombstone Pass. You can reach the summit via a moderate 6.6-mile loop, which takes around 3.5 hours depending on how much you stop to enjoy the beauty of summer in the Cascades. About halfway through the hike, you leave the lush rainforest and head into the scenic vistas of Iron Mountain’s summit. Unlike Washington State’s famed Highway 20, Oregon’s stays open during the winter months, and Iron Mountain and the surrounding area provide ample backcountry skiing and riding terrain.
