This camel-looking peak is the result of two different geologic time periods. Made of primarily of red sandstone and a bit of granite, Camelback Mountain is what geologists refer to as an unconformity. And since it’s one of the few mounds rising above the sprawling Arizona desert, it is a favorite spot to hike. Located just north of Scottsdale proper, the peak features two trails – Echo Canyon (1.14 miles to summit) and Cholla (1.4 miles to summit) – that will take you to the summit and back in a few hours. Good, choss-free rock can be hard to find in the desert as well, so when climbers first came upon the Praying Monk feature, Camelback became a local crag. So if you are wandering through the desert and come across a giant sleeping camel, hit the trail and check out the view.
