And like the 18 Winter Games before them, these weren't without the agony of defeat. US darling Picabo Street, in her third Winter Games, said goodbye after the women's downhill.
Street, two-time Olympic medalist and the reigning super G gold medalist, failing to qualify in that event, had one more chance for glory in the downhill February 11. The stage appeared to be set when Street won the downhill training run, despite it having been postponed due to weather.
But it just didn't happen that day. While she had exceptionally fast split times in the upper reaches of the course, she was bogged down in soft snow on the lower portion, a victim of her late start number and the course's changing light. Somehow though, we know that won't be the last we hear from Picabo Street.
So now sights are set on the summer 2004 Games in Athens, which staged the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The 2006 Winter Games will be held Italian-style in the city of Torino.
