Snowboard: Chris Klug

Chris Klug

One of our heroes of the show was parallel giant slalom snowboard racer Chris Klug, who just 20 months ago underwent a liver transplant, but who just eight weeks later was back on snow.

Klug, honored with a spot on the contingent named to carry the World Trade Center flag into the Opening Ceremonies, finished his last heat with a broken boot buckle temporarily repaired with duct tape. But this isn't a surprise from the guy who was waterskiing the day before his transplant surgery and said, "My arms were still sore when I woke up from surgery."

"I was down and just kept fighting. I didn't give up. That's kind of who I am..."
— Chris Klug, February 15

Squeaking past first-round opponent Jerome Sylvestre of Canada by a scant .05 seconds before making up a .75-second deficit when German Walter Feichter crashed in the second run of the quarterfinals. But he got his chance and took two wins against the formidable Nicolas Huet of France to take 3rd overall.

So Klug added an Olympic bronze medal to his trophy case of life, along with his massive abdominal scar, and established himself as a beacon to those millions suffering from organ ailments.
