XIX Winter Olympic Games
Wrap-Up

Janica Kostelic
Ski: Janica Kostelic

And then there's Janica Kostelic, the "Croatian Sensation," who became the first alpine skier to win four Olympic medals in a single Winter Games. Looking a little like a Euro-Picabo with her freckled face and pigtails, Kostelic, in winning her fourth medal, in the giant slalom, demolished the competition, winning by over a second, which is to ski racing what a lap is to NASCAR.

"SI could really relax after my gold medal. (After a medal) you are really relaxed, you don't think about anything else. You just ski..."
— Janica Kostelic, February 17

Kostelic's four-medal history making feat, was the second great achievement for her. Just a week earlier, Kostelic's combined gold was Croatia's first medal in history. Always the humble one, Kostelic said "I'm happy, but records are made to be broken. Someone will break my record soon."
