The Shenandoah Valley has long been praised, both literally and religiously, for its beauty. Old Rag Mountain is right in the heart of Shenandoah Valley National Park in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. It is extremely popular with hikers, and unfortunately just as popular with park rangers and search and rescue teams. The 9.1-mile (round trip) hike to the summit quickly gains elevation and even involves some precarious scrambling near the top. Be confident in your fitness level and be sure to bring more than enough water for this rather strenuous loop. You won’t escape the crowds of the park, but you will get high above to take in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
