Grandfather Mountain sits just outside Grandfather Mountain State Park so you can reach the summit without paying any fees, although arguably the best way to keep your state’s parks open is by visiting and purchasing the day-use or annual passes. Some know this peak by another name – Calloway Mountain. The peak features scenic hiking, backpacking, and even climbing. The hike to the summit is about 7 miles roundtrip on a moderate trail that winds through forests, beautiful vistas, rocky crags, and wilderness teeming with wildlife. Grandfather is home to the headwaters of the Linville River, which carved out the beautifully famous Linville Gorge Wilderness just to the south. North Carolina is home to many Southern Sixers in the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, but Grandfather is one of the standouts.
