Maroon Peak is one of the Maroon Bells – two stunning 2,300-foot prominences that climb past 14,000 feet in central Colorado’s Elk Mountains. The two “bells” – Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak – are a third of a mile apart and cast their towering twin reflection onto Maroon Lake. Although the pictures look dreamy, the “Deadly Bells” are two of the most difficult climbs in the Rockies, with precariously loose rock often tumbling down their steep slopes. You can hike to Maroon Lake and enjoy the view, but you do have to register with the White River National Forest Rangers and secure a permit if you plan on staying the night. The area sees heavy traffic due to its spectacular beauty, but summiting the peaks is a completely different animal. Proceed with caution.
