Extreme Winds
27 SEP 2000 - ADVANCED BASE CAMP

Ian Hatchett

I am writing from Advanced Base Camp after returning from six days at Camp 1 and Camp 2. Generally good weather was experienced as the team worked its way up the mountain. However, on the night of the 25th, we experienced extremely strong winds in Camps 1 and 2. Unconfirmed estimates placed the winds at approximately 80 to 85 knots. Three tents were destroyed at Camp 1, but no apparent injuries were incurred.

Meanwhile, back in my Bibler I tent, as things got really ugly around midnight, I got fully dressed and put my boots on in case the strong winds destroyed the tent. I began to think about the fall line should the tent be blown down the side of the mountain, with me inside. How fast could I get the door zipper undone? Fortunately, dawn found myself and the tent intact, but with no sleep. I am currently resting at ABC, preparing for another acclimatization/summit bid in the next two to three days.
