GENERAL INFORMATION - From Selkirk Tangiers

Altitude

Most of our skiing takes place below 3,000 meters (9,850 feet). Due to the geographical location of our mountains and the climatic conditions, excellent snow is common from top to bottom without having to go to elevations where altitudes may become a problem.

Fitness

To fully enjoy heli-skiing you should be in reasonable shape. We recommend that you engage in some kind of exercise program eight to ten weeks prior to your ski trip. It stands to reason that the fitter you are the better you will be able to handle the skiing challenges, and the less likely it will be for you to get hurt.

Skiing Ability

If you are a strong intermediate skier in a regular ski area you should be able to adapt quickly to deep snow skiing. Most of our guides are also ski instructors and will give you helpful tips. It might be of further help to you to try a pair of our specially selected rental skis for these snow conditions. As well, we will do our best to put you in with a group of similar skiing ability.

Initiation Powder Weeks - IPW / January 24 - 31 and March 14 - 21, 1998

Each winter we schedule certain weeks for this program which is meant for first timers who are hesitant to join our regular programs. There will be two guides per group of which one will be giving skiing instructions. The program is limited to a maximum of ten people (1 group) per scheduled week and includes 25,000 vertical meters (82,000 feet) of which 21,000 meters (69,000 feet) are guaranteed. Cost includes the use of a pair of "Fat Boys" rental skis.

Equipment and Clothing

The FAT BOYS have revolutionized heli-skiing in recent years and have made it a lot easier for first timers as well as seasoned powder enthusiasts. The wider surface and shorter length makes for more floatation and easier and more effortless turning in all conditions. Selkirk Tangiers is continually experimenting with new brands of various length and width in order to be able to recommend the best ski for your skiing ability. As a result of this our rental shop offers proven powder ski brands such as Miller and the stainless-steel Volants which are the guides favourite, besides the Fat Boys (Atomic Plus, Lacroix and Vlkl). All skis are equipped with adjustable Salomon bindings and ski brakes.

We certainly have no objection if you prefer to bring your own skis. We suggest a GS-type ski with a soft flex and of moderate length in relation to your height. Most ski manufacturers produce all-around skis that are designed to be more forgiving and to handle all kinds of needs.

Most ski bindings that are well maintained and functional are suitable for heli-skiing.

Ski Brakes are mandatory and ski straps are not allowed for safety reasons.

Ski Boots are not available for rent. We recommend that while traveling you carry your boots as hand luggage.

A one piece or zip-together suit seems to be the most suited for heli-skiing. It should be of water resistant, windproof and breathable material. If snow sticks to your suit you best leave it at home. Selkirk Tangiers has a selection of powder gloves and ski accessories available for sale.

Safety Precautions and Equipment

Each of our skiers is equipped with an avalanche beacon Ortovox. The Ortovox (Transmitter and Receiver) is a safety device which enables us to locate a buried person. The guide is in constant radio contact with the helicopter and the other guides in the local area. The helicopter in turn carries out periodic location reports with the base. Most emergencies can be handled with the equipment the guides carry in their packs. In addition the helicopter carries oxygen, crevasse rescue equipment, a toboggan, probes and shovels, emergency food rations, sleeping bags and spare ski equipment.

Selkirk Tangiers Helicopter Skiing Ltd. makes regular studies of the snowpack by keeping track of snowfalls, temperatures and wind. In addition we keep in close contact with other nearby heli-skiing operations and we are are an active participant and subscriber of the daily information exchange between backcountry operators and the Canadian Avalanche Association.

Snowboards, Mono- and Tele-skis

We welcome participants of the above modes to our area and realize that this is perhaps the fastest growing market. At the same time it is a fact that unless you are a very good tele-skier, an excellent mono-skier or an even better snowboarder you should not be part of the traditional heli-ski group with downhill skis and bindings. Due to the fact that most snowboarders can not or do not want to ski on normal skis and the fact that we can not carry extra skis on the helicopter this is absolutely essential. You should also be aware that often we have to traverse across a slope and at times go uphill to reach our destinations. If you are planning to use tele-skis, a mono-ski or a snowboard we ask that you advise our booking office at the time of application.
