Mazama, Washington

When you head over the Cascades, you leave the rain shadow that hangs over the west; the air is drier, the snow is fluffier, ponderosa pines replace the hemlocks and firs, and the gray is a little less frequent. Mazama is one of Washington’s small eastside towns that reaps the geographical benefits. Located in the Methow Valley on a popular whitewater and fishing stretch of the Methow River, Mazama is surrounded with some of the best nordic skiing, rock climbing, backpacking, heli-skiing and backcountry exploration in Washington. It still resembles a crossroads town, one where the answer to all your questions will lead you to the famous general store in town, The Mazama Store. But, that reputation is slowly changing as Mazama becomes more of a year-round resort destination for people that want to enjoy the 120 miles of nordic trails in the winter and 2,000 feet of multi-pitch sport and trad routes in the summer, with a bit of backcountry skiing, hiking, mountain biking, river rafting, kayaking, and fly fishing in between.
