    1999 US Snowboarding Grand Prix

    Petraska Ain't No Punk
Welcome to the '99 Grand Prix home slice. Here's your starting point to follow the tours, triumphs and tragedies that lead us to the ice coast and the final battle for a truck. On the left and right you can surf through Sunday River's exploits. Otherwise jump to the stop you want to see above. It all began in Mt. Bachelor Oregon before Christmas, headed to Copper Mountain, Colorado, in January and Sunday River, Maine, for the ice test in the end of February. Michalchuk's doubles in the pipe there were pulled out for the first time in competition and stuck ever so sweetly. Too bad the judges were high on heater fumes and missed it, ayuh.

"The problem was that Shannon's a pipe innovating aerialist and Sondra a skin suited speed queen..."

It wasn't all bro downs and pow for me. I froze frequently and drank heavily to bring you the best freewheelin photos, audio and tall tales I could code in a day. Surf on through for yourself and find out how your favorite rider did on the big American boarding and break dancing tour, this the final winter of the century.

Then There Was the Super Prix
    Michal-huck
The US Nationals combined in Okemo, Vermont with the Grand Prix to award the real ruler a big new truck.

Shannon Dunn and Mike Michalchuk took to the Boardercross March 28 for a final attempt at a big tough Chevy truck. These kids don't do boardercross so it was quite an event to see them line up against a bunch of speed freaks in the gate when their regimes have always included a strict halfpipe diet. In the end they both kept close enough to maintain their ruling titles and big-ass trucks.

The Super Prix was the crescendo of this season's Grand Prix Trilogy and US Nationals held the last weekend in March at Okemo. A rider's three best results in the combined contests won the truck. Easy, right? Well, Shannon Dunn, who pulled 1st places in both Bachelor and Copper, had to hit the boardercross to battle compatriot Sondra Van Ert, 1st in Sunday River (and this weekend in Okemo). The problem was that Shannon's a pipe innovating aerialist and Sondra a skin suited speed queen.

The men were similarly in a menageóis tie for the truck. Mr. Michalchuk was in control with a win in Copper and three 2nd place finishes. Ross Powers took the other two and a third here in O-ke-mo. Then there's kick-ass Canadians, Jasey Jay Anderson (1st in Maine) and Mark Fawcett (1st in Bachelor). The ties had to battle it out in the boardercross to take home the Chevy truck.

The drama kept it all exciting to the end and forced all into the unquestionably closest thing to freeriding competition has found.

Ryan Neptune and Amy Johnson took the first boardercross National's title and the $1,700 apiece which is cool for them. Neptune blasted past Seth Wescott, Jeff Greenwood and Canadian hardboot cross dresser Jasey Jay. Amy Johnson attacked past Shannon Dunn and Kelly Clark when they started bumping butts for the final lead. Shannon recovered fast but the course ended before she could catch her. No matter, Sondra Van Ert had failed to qualify for the finals and Shannon took the truck anyway.

Other weekend notables were Karla Gembarowski's McTwist to cripplers that earned her only fifth. Danny Kass showed his 16-year-old back-to-back Maoist McTwists to take second only to be shoved out by Michalchuk's double back at the bottom. Like Shannon, everyone was still behind Ross in the end and neither Ross nor Shannon had to do anything for their last run to win it. Ross didn't do as well in the Boardercross so he ripped a rodeo and a spin through the finish for the consolation round.
