He fell after the last gate in his third run of the finals. At this stage, the cause of death has not been released by the medical chief of staff, but it is believed that he broke his neck. Attempts to revive him failed, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Lötscher was wearing protective equipment.

The Parallel GS and the Boardercross finals have been cancelled and all riders and race staff met yesterday evening for a memorial mass. On Saturday, all the riders and officials will gather at 1pm to ride for Lötscher in the mountains above Leysin. Halfpipe finals will be held on Sunday at 10pm.

All the sympathies of the International Snowboard Federation, the organizers and the riders are with his family and friends.
