  • Tragedy at Leysin: Swiss Rider Daniel Lötscher Killed

    Köffler

Dedicated to the memory of Daniel Lötscher, today's halfpipe contest was very calm and subdued — with all riders expressing their respect for the fallen rider.

Heavy snowfalls last night made the pipe very difficult to ride and even the "chief-digger on duty," Doug Atkinson, and his team of side-slippers couldn't improve it.

The pipe was in such bad shape, the male riders decided to not hold a final run, instead accepting the rankings after the semifinals as the final results. After the women's finals, the male riders put on a 30-minute jam session for the spectators.

In the women's division, Satu Jarvela (FIN/Arnette) had the most solid run and beat out Norwegian Kjersi Oestgaard (NOR/Burton) and 3rd-place Norwegian Stine Brun Kjeldaas (NOR/Duotone).

In the men's pipe, young Austrian Joachim Köffler (AUT/Duotone) dominated with a clean run featuring a nice 900 and huge airs. Köffler was highest ranked today and at the prize ceremony he could hardly contain his excitement over his first victory in a Motorola ISF World Pro Tour contest. (If he continues riding like this, he'll surely get used to it...) In 2nd place was Norwegian Espen Arvesen (NOR/Burton), who came very close to winning in Grindelwald earlier this season. Third place went to Swiss rider Gian Simmen (SUI/Bluewindow).
