Want to join a club where the only membership fee is bagging peaks? If you live in the Northeast and love to hike, then put this one on your to-do list. Each of the 46 peaks on this historic list is in Adirondack Park in upstate New York.

Why is this list historic? Well, when it was created it was believed that all of the 46 peaks were at least 4,000 feet tall. Later surveys found that four didn’t measure up, but the list wasn’t changed. Another peak was found to be right at 4,000 feet (MacNaughton Mountain), but it’s not a required summit to complete the list. So complete the original 46, and you’re in!

Twenty of the peaks don’t have official trails, but due to the volume of peakbaggers seeking their summits, there are some boot-beaten paths to follow. The rest have well-maintained hiking trails, but the sheer volume of peaks still makes this list quite an accomplishment, trail or not.

All of the peaks are in Essex County except for Seward, Donaldson, Emmons, and Seymour, which are located in adjacent Franklin County. Adirondack Park is half private land, but the 46 peaks are in the public forest preserve. Lake Placid makes a great home base for a hiking trip in the Adirondacks.
