The Race Begins July 2002 Mittenwald to Imst
A quick
warm-up through Mittenwald to a high speed blitz on a gravel path, stage one is our initiation into a very different environment. The
mountains have a very different look as we climb through a high valley surrounded by these tall peaks.
A quick descent through a ski area, another village, followed by rollers leads to a sharp descent followed by a wall-like climb they call 16%. (Which hurts because I know that I can ride 16% but this feels steeper.)
Disappointingly, we eventually end up hiking more of
that section. We climb thorough a tunnel and we
finally get to a spot where can ride the bike again. The route continues up the valley and we realize that in the midst of all these mountains we have to crest somewhere. We cross a stream and the ascent begins in earnest. It is serene setting with the scent of pine and other vegetation highlighting visuals of green and gray rock with cows and bells ringing in the background. To keep you on your toes and sap your remaining energy, the trail becomes slightly technical. As we crest out, we are treated to an amazing 180-degree view of the surrounding peaks. It's a quick look and then it is time to descend to another valley floor en route to Imst.
