Hi Mountain Zone, it's Wally Berg. I'm calling you from Monjo along the Dudh Kosi river at the base of that infamous Namche hill. All 14 of our Alpine Ascents Everest Base Camp Trek members are here with me. I realize I left you hanging for a couple of days with our news from the airport, strike day, people coming in. As the copy of the Kathmandu Post, which was delivered very early in the morning to my room at the Yak & Yeti said the next morning the strike was in fact without incident — no big deal. The clean, open streets were pleasant.

A few folks came in on night flights, so we didn't get together until the morning of the 29th. We had a great city tour and the evening of the 29th Todd Burleson showed up, getting ready to start a little bit of expedition business for those climbers that are few days behind us. Todd, Lhakpa Rita, Ong Chu — some of the old, climbing Sherpa hands — Dawa, myself and all of our group went out to a great dinner and 5am the next morning, from the Yak & Yeti, we were having a quick breakfast and we were off to the airport.

Yesterday morning we got to Lukla really early — beautiful weather. Normally I have to kind of hang out at Lukla to get things going, but it was just so nice we walked down to the Dudh Kosi river and got to Phakding where we spent the night; we got down there by lunch actually.

Off to a really easy, beautiful start on this trip. It is great to be out here in the Khumbu that first night sleep always goes really well, with the Dudh Kosi river singing in the background, very peaceful, soothing sounds. We're still getting out of our travel mode, but the trek today has gone really beautiful to this point and the Namche hill awaits. But once we get up there, we're back in our home country. The expedition business will be starting up from Namche: people coming and going. We'll check in with old friends and begin our acclimatization before we journey further up the valley. A report will come from Namche.

All 14 members are doing great, happy to be here. Very wide-eyed in this big, wonderful world: first of Kathmandu and now of the mountains of the Everest region.
