 Final approach An enduring memory for me, which is reinforced each time I fly into the mountains for a climbing trip, is the view out the window on final approach to our destination. The terrain gets bigger and bigger until it swallows you up in its vastness. It takes a few days to get your bearings - to understand the depth of your insignificance. Distances are deceptive. What looks like a mile away is really 5 miles out of reach. Sometimes people fly right back out and go home when they are presented with such powerful country; itŐs just not on a human scale and thatŐs what makes it so special. |
