…And Closer Still

Salomon/Eco-Internet hangs on by minutes, while Team Fairydown Fleet CookieTime looks forward to their next cold-weather race.

Eco-Challenge Sabah 2000 is a battle to the wire. Team Salomon/Eco-Internet [go to Team Bio] has maintained their lead through the river paddling, caving, ropes, and yet another section of sailing, but only by mere minutes. It’ll be a fight to the finish amongst the three lead teams: Salomon/Eco-Internet, Team Spie [go to Team Bio], and Team Aussiespirit.com [go to Team Bio].

While the leads teams suffer from the pressure for the win, others, including John Howard’s Team Fairydown Fleet CookieTime[go to Team Bio], feel another sort of pain. Foot rot and blisters compound with the unforgiving climate to wreak havoc with the bodies and spirits of even the best racers in the world.

This race is brutal. As the river rose, race officials declared the Segama River swimming section “unsafe” for 21 teams, re-routing them through a shorter, altered course. But “shorter” in this 500+K race doesn’t mean easy. For those competing in this year’s Eco-Challenge, nothing is easy.
