[Editor's note: Mark Burnett, creator of the runaway television hit, Survivor, founded the Eco-Challenge in 1992; the first race was held in 1995. As race organizer and director, he is currently on-course in Sabah. Here, we present a series of his pre-race letters, which were distributed to all Eco-Challenge competitors.]
Dear Competitors,
Eco-Challenge is an Expedition Race. We want to keep to our philosophy of an expedition (versus a long triathlon), and this years race will reflect that philosophy.
Therefore, when you leave the starting line, you must carry with you all the food you need for the entire race. There will not be food re-supplies or the option to purchase food along the race course. Additionally, you will leave the starting line with drinking water, but once it runs out, you must purify water from sources along the course for the rest of the race. We will not provide teams with drinking water at re-supply areas.
Now this will most likely affect the size of backpacks you bring as well as your decision on what race food to carry. Remember, the fish are plentiful and there is more paddling in this race than any other Eco-Challenge. We expect you to do your research about Sabah and be prepared for an expedition when you arrive.
Your experience in Sabah will be one you will never forget, and the race course will be a true test of your teams decision-making ability, resourcefulness, stamina and team dynamics. Remember, your team will be splitting into two groups and traveling separate routes several times during the race. This area of the world is legendary in expedition lore and the jungle portion is one of the best protected and incredible jungles on earth.
Be prepared for anything!
Mark Burnett
