XC and DH Combined in Snow Summit
Conyers, GA. Pulls Financial Backing
Too Much Snow at Crystal Mt., WA.

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. (April 23, 1999) -- The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced Friday that, due to circumstances beyond their control, changes have been made to the 1999 Diesel/UCI Mountain Bike World Cup schedule.

The sixth round of the cross-country series and the fourth round of the downhill series will be held jointly at Snow Summit, Calif., June 26-27. The cross-country event was originally scheduled for June 19-20 in Conyers, Ga., with the downhill event June 26-27 at Crystal Mountain, Wash.

The relocation of the cross-country was a result of the City of Conyers withdrawing their financial support from the event. At Crystal Mountain, 200 inches of snow making the creation of a downhill course impossible.

NORBA Managing Director Leslie Klein

National Off-Road Bicycle Association (NORBA) Managing Director Leslie Klein is confident the first-ever double World Cup event will be a success.

"While it is unfortunate that the World Cup events couldn't be held at their original locations, we are excited about Snow Summit's involvement. We are proud that the United States has the depth of venues and versatile promoters who can step up and agree to host the double World Cup event with only two months lead time. Gino Lisiecki and Wendy Zupan of Team Round and Round have USA Cycling's full support to make this a successful event," Klein said.

The double round will have a schedule similar to the World Mountain Bike Championships. Downhill semi-finals and finals will take place Saturday, with the dual finals Saturday evening. On Sunday, the cross-country women will go off in the morning and the men in the afternoon. Citizen events and junior cross-country races will also be held.

Recent cancellations by the Tour of BC (Canada) and the Italian Cup have opened up the UCI calendar, and these changes to the World Cup schedule will not conflict with other major events.

Teams and exhibitors may contact Team Round and Round at 509/838-3707 for more information regarding the event.
