Breckenridge Snow Summit Sierra at Tahoe
Breckenridge Wrap-Up

11 DEC 2000

Supper was certainly served in early December when the Vans Triple Crown of Snowboarding brought the roof down and erected another, with shiny new shingles and a smoking brick chimney. While fresh snow brought the common resort chaos, there was an added kick to the chili and larger portions to be hadit wasn't your ordinary week in Breckenridge, Colorado - that's for sure.

Let's start with the ubergrom, Shaun White, who's bullying the pipe at a mere 14 years old. He's in junior high for crying out loud! Not only is he throwing down double overhead McTwists (like it ain't no thang), but he never bothers to waver in the air and the judges seem to recognize that. Shaun stole second place from a posse of world class rippers including Daniel Franck and Ross Powers, and climbed onto the podium, opening eyes and giving a glimpse of what's to come.

The big air venue wasn't your daddy's kicker by any means. With a big "OUCH" painted at the ended of the tabletop, Leslee Olson came out like a hurricane and blew the covers off us all, attempting a rodeo 720. In the past, the ladies comp was typically won with a three or a five, but Leah Wagner, Juanita Platz and Leanne Pelosi threw down their own inversions and freaky grabs, flipping instead of spinning and showing the crowd that, indeed, "Girl's Rule!"

Let's not forget the snowboard derby, I mean snowboard cross. Imagine going side by side through the park with your five fastest friends - no brakes, balls to the wall, winner drinks for free. Well that's exactly what snowboard cross is peoplesix rippers terrorize step downs, big hits, berms, banks and a few features I can't even name, much less ride.

The best part of it allit's not over yet. The second stop is headed for Snow Summit in Southern Cali where the sun shall shine and the stakes are just as high. Vans promises a show full of air and style, with some good tunes and gourmet barbecues to keep us all fat and happy. It's all due to get down Feb 15, 2001be there or be silly.
