Dual: All Bootes and Booty
09 SEP 2000 Full Race Results | Race Gallery

Mammoth Mountain handed the comps a brilliant course, complete with huge berms and a fantastic course-closing tabletop. The riders went large in kind, as many busted big airs, and even a few backflips. Yeti rider Nathan Rennie blew the crowd away with his work on the neck-breaking flip, crashing once, and then pulling it off to everyone's amazement. The crowd was also treated to a fabulous display by the local mountainboarders, who pulled runs between heats in the dual. One rider even busted a 540 off the table!

"Donovan declined to perform her usual champagne-baptism on the crowd, claiming that she had to save it for 'visiting relatives'..."

Men
The men's division was definitely crowded; all of the big names were there, as well as appearances by several old-school pros and BMXer's. 'Pistol Pete' Loncarevich, one of BMX's most famous riders, and 'Insane Wayne" Croasdale headed up the old-school SoCal contingent, and it looked as though the course, which owed much to BMX track design, might allow these guys a bit of an edge. Loncarevich made it as far as the 1/8 final before being eliminated by Shaums March, but Croasdale had bad luck on the draw, and had to run against Brian Lopes in the 1/16th final. He didn't win.

Aussie downhilling demon Nathan Rennie went to the quarter-finals, and gave it up to Wade Bootes. Eric Carter eliminated Shaums March to set up the semi-final, where Bootes took the lead, and went to the final. On the other end, Brian Lopes took out Rich Houseman, and Mike King to challenge Bootes in the final. In an unexpected move, Bootes went just a little bit harder, and took the final. Lopes has been dominating the field all year, with Bootes always just a bit behind in the end. Perhaps Bootes had had enough, and went large in the finals to justify the rainbow jersey he's had to wear all year, as the reigning World Cup dual champion.

Women
The women's division is never as crowded as the men's, but that's actually a good thing as the spectators are always treated to a competition involving the top riders in the sport. Leigh 'Booty' Donovan was all over it, taking out riders like Buhl, Lisa Sher, and Katrina Miller for the championship. Miller had to win over Tai-Lee Muxlow, and then Cheri Elliot to take second place, while Lisa Sher edged out Cheri Elliot for 3rd and 4th, respectively.

In a small twist on the awards ceremonies, Donovan declined to perform her usual champagne-baptism on the crowd, claiming that she had to save it for "visiting relatives"...?
