During the 1995 season, Sabrina Sadeghi (suh-DEGG-ee) was as close to bulletproof as you can get, winning five out of five World Cup halfpipe contests en route to the World Cup title.

Since then, though, Sadeghi she's been purely mortal. She tore the ACL in her right knee during training in August 1995, and after free-riding through the second half of last winter, she felt she was on track for a strong return this season - only to reinjure the knee during a photo shoot in November.

Comment: "It's only the MCL that's torn, so I'll be back in January. Dr. [Richard] Steadman was very positive about things and so am I. It's a whole different thing from the ACL, which is good. It was just one of those dumb-luck things while I was free-riding. I zigged when I should have zagged. But I'll be back. I'd like to be in the World Championships but we'll see how it goes."

Start-up: She was a figure skater as a youngster instead of a skier, which may account for her creativity in the 'pipe. After six years, though, she stopped skating because of the potential cost and took up snowboarding in 1990.

A year later, she began mixing halfpipe success with injuries. Smacked by a hit-and-run skier at an Arizona ski area in 1991, she was back riding two month later. During the '94 season, she injured a shoulder in a racing crash but was back on a 'board by season's end and won the national freestyle title at June Mountain, Calif.

She was injury-free in '95 and cruised to the World Cup HP title. But then the knee a year ago...and again this fall. Still, as Sadeghi said, "I'll be back ... It's just a little bit of a setback."

Busman's holiday: In addition to free-riding to regain her touch, she spent part of the summer coaching - at Windell's camp and the Camp of Champions at Whistler. "I was a camper at Whistler when I was 13 or 14, so it was a lot of fun to go back up there. I certainly had a different perspective...and a good time."

Cross training: Snowshoeing and cross country skiing - "I did a lot of things I normally don't get to do because I'm riding" - not only were fun but helped with rehabbing the knee.

School: She's nearly halfway to a bachelor's degree on international studies, possibly for a diplomatic career. "I think I'd like to work for the UN."

Fave flick: "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." Why? "It's such a fun, playful movie. There is some adult humor."

Bookshelf: "I read like a book worm." She's read all of Tom Robbins and, during the preseason, read "Mists of Avalon" and "Geek Love."
