  • Giant Slalom: Austrians Take It

KAPRUN, Austria - Friday the 13th proved unlucky for the U.S. Snowboard Team, as the U.S. men and women riders failed to qualify for the finals in the season opening Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup parallel slalom event in Kaprun, Austria.

On the women's side, Austria's Manuela Riegler captured the top spot, with Germany's Heidi Renoth finishing second and Marion Posch of Italy in third. Defending world champion Sondra Van Ert was the highest U.S. finisher at 16th (32.49), while Lynn Ott (35.28) finished 27th.

In the men's event, Werner Ebenbauer of Austria finished first, while Mathieu Chiquet of France was second and Sweden's Stephen Copp was third. Anton Pogue was the top American, finishing 21st (29.58). Mike Jacoby was 30th (30.61), while Jeff Archibald finished 42nd (32.14), Jeff Greenwood 45th (32.46) and Rob Berney was 48th (32.60).

The U.S. looks to improve Saturday in Kaprun with the men's and women's GS events.
