Raid Gauloises

Team Dusk2Dawn Bio

Team Dusk2Dawn was created by Ed Bugarin and Pete James, who first raced together in the New Zealand expedition race the Southern Traverse in 1996. During a tough race over many days, these two racers from different countries, and backgrounds brought together by chance, found a mutual respect and an ability to work together.

After outstanding results in many more races such as the Eco-Challenge, Beast of the East and 4Winds, both together and as part of other teams, they have succeeded in bringing together a top team from around the World. With Australia's Jane Hall (2nd in Eco-Challenge 1998 with Pete) is joined by Matt Siegel and Mike Snow to compete for the top place in what many regard as the top expedition race in the world, the Raid Gauloises.

No less important are the support crew, who must travel across country to meet them not just using motor transport, but on foot and by raft as well. Crew captain Carol Jaxon has supported the team many times, and is a top-class endurance athlete in her own right: a Kona Ironman triathlete and top Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe racer. She is joined by David Sherlock: professional chef, professional bicycle mechanic, Ironman triathlete, adventure racer and whitewater kayaker.

The team members are:

Peter James (Captain - UK) - Britain's top adventure racer. Second in Eco-Challenge Morocco 1998 with Jane Hall. Winner of the Solo Western Isles, and numerous other mountain running, cycling and kayak races. British junior orienteering champion. aerospace engineer, massage therapist and writer.

Jane Hall (Australia) - Seven-time World Champion in paddle sport - K1 marathon, outrigger, ocean kayak/ski. Top-5 finisher and team captain in previous Eco-Challenges. Winner of the Australian multisport events, the Summer and Winter Classic, and the New Zealand Mountains to the Sea. Jane has a PhD in Marine Ecology from the University of Sydney and is an honorary director of CleanUp Australia and CleanUp the World.

Ed Bugarin (Hawaii) - Ex-USA Special Forces Sergeant Major, founder of the Dusk2Dawn Adventure Race and the International STREND Fitness Challenge. Ed works as a fitness trainer and high risk security consultant. An instructor at the internationally renowned Presidio Adventure Racing Academy, Ed is a veteran of the 1999 Beast of the East (3rd team), 1998 4Winds Arizona (1st), Southern Traverse (New Zealand), and numerous other adventure races, Ironman triathlons, marathons, and ultra-marathons.

Mike Snow (USA) - A Tae Kwon Do Black-Belt and winner of two State Championships, Mike is an experienced mountaineer and open-water diver. Graduating from the Eco-Challenge Adventure Racing School, Mike's racing experience has included 2nd Team 4Winds Adventure Race 1999 (Wyoming), Raid the North (Canada), Mountain Quest (Colorado), Sea2Summit (Canada), Desert Quest (Arizona), World Rogaining Championship (Canada) and Hi-Tec races.

Matt Siegel (USA) - A professional fitness trainer and personal trainer, Matt has worked as an instructor for Adventure Fitness Training in Santa Monica. Matt's 1999 adventure race results include 1st place (solo) Endorphin Fix (West Virginia), 3rd place Beast of the East (Virginia), 2nd place Leona Divide 50 Mile Run. He is a qualified Emergency Medical Technician and lifeguard.

Carol Jaxon (Crew Captain - Hawaii) - The team's crew captain for many races, Carol is a highly accomplished athlete in her own right. A member of the top women's outrigger canoe team in Hawaii, Carol was a member of the 1st women's team in the 1999 Hawaii Swamp Romp race, and is a force to be reckoned with in marathons, ultra-marathons and the Kona Ironman.

David Sherlock (Crew Member - NZ) - Professional chef and bike mechanic, David is also an experienced multisport racer (run/bike/kayak), Ironman triathlete, whitewater kayaker and runner. As if that wasn't enough to make him a highly desirable crew member (NZ Coast to Coast and Southern Traverse), he also holds a commercial vehicle license.
