Raid Gauloises 2000
Kathmandu, Nepal

Editor's Note: MountainZone.com will follow Raid Gauloises from two prespectives this year. Daily updates directly from Raid Gauloises will be posted, along with updates from Team Dusk2Dawn's team reporter.

Competitors and support crews have been arriving in Kathmandu, Nepal from all corners of the globe for the past two weeks. This diverse group of men and women of all ages have come together for the 10th anniversary Raid Gauloises.

I've come as a media representative and my husband is a member of Team Dusk2Dawn — a team of experienced adventure racers who have come together as a team for the first time. The brainchild of Peter James and Edward Bugarin, who met and raced together at the 1996 Southern Traverse, Team Dusk2Dawn is a truly international team.

James, a 33-year-old engineer and the team's captain, hails from the UK. Edward Bugarin, 50, was raised in Hawaii and runs his Internet fitness training business from his Honolulu home. Since their initial meeting four years ago, James has gone on to race the Eco-Challenge two times. Once with veteran adventure racer and two-time Eco runner-up, Jane Hall, the female member of Team Dusk2Dawn. Hall, 45, is a marine biologist based in Sydney, Australia.

While living in Seattle, WA, two years ago, James met Mike Snow, 30, a Microsoft software engineer. They trained together for a year and decided to then to do Raid Gauloises. Matt Siegel, a fitness trainer from Portland, OR, raced the 1999 Beast of the East with Bugarin. Siegel, at 25, is half the age of Bugarin and three years younger than Bugarin's twin boys.

Despite the previous experience of the team, this is the first Raid Gauloises for each member. Gathering together in this exotic Far Eastern city of Kathmandu, the competitors are poised at the edge of the mysterious Himalayan Mountains. Known for both their beauty and their danger, these mountains are unforgiving. Racers will need to stay alert despite fatigue, extreme weather conditions, and altitude — as no mistakes are small when dealing with the great Himalaya.

As each member of Dusk2Dawn arrived for the race, they were introduced to those members that had not previously met. The consensus was that the experience and friendships among the members who know each other has led to unprecedented respect and trust — two qualities that will be tested to their limits during the 12 days of racing to come.
