Team Tactel Ispira

Will years of experience and miles of practice pay off for this team?

By Buddy Levy, Quokka Sports

Tactel Ispira is one of the most experienced teams in the entire field, with a staggering 17 Eco-Challenges between its four members. Captain Marshall Ulrich and teammate Mark Macy have raced together in every Eco-Challenge since Utah 1995, formerly as Team Stray Dogs.

Marshall Ulrich is celebrated for his record solo 77-hour, self-supported run from Badwater U.S.A., which lies at 282 feet below sea level in Death Valley, California, to the summit of Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the lower 48 states.

Mark Macy, a trial lawyer who practices in Denver, Colorado, is a multiple winner of the very difficult Iditasport Snowshoe race, an ultra-marathon on snow and ice held annually in Alaska.

Adrian Crane, a computer systems developer who lives in Modesto, California, has also competed in every Eco-Challenge since Utah 1995, and is the team's primary navigator. In 1997, Crane was the U.S. National Long Distance Orienteering Champion.

Tactel Ispira's woman competitor is Maureen (Mo) Monaghan, a massage therapist from Dallas, Texas. A decade younger than her mid-to-late 40's male teammates, Monaghan has over 25 adventure races to her credit, and is an active professional mountain bike racer.

Tactel Ispira's strength lies in a wealth of experience, Crane's navigational abilities, and their skills trekking as well as on the bikes. They are admittedly not the strongest paddlers in this field. Said Macy, staring at all the gear they will be needing during the race, "Man, I think I'll go back to ultra-running. All you need for those is a few pairs of running shoes."
