Photographer Jim Nelson has spent a lifetime in the mountains, and his images reflect a mature relationship with that landscape. He began climbing in the Cascades while he was still a teenager growing up near Seattle and by now has a dozen first ascents in the range to his credit.

For more than 20 years he has worked as a professional alpine guide, teaching climbing skills and leading mountaineers of all abilities up long rock climbs and serious alpine peaks from Alaska to Yosemite. The 42-year-old Nelson is perhaps best known for his photography, which is characterized by a strong compositional style and unhurried approach. His use of medium format equipment results in big transparencies and exceptionally fine focus, an appropriate choice for the magnificent landscapes that are his favorite subjects.

Jim Nelson's work has appeared in National Geographic Books, Climbing Magazine, Backpacking Magazine and other national publications. His large portfolio of stock images is handled by Adventure Photo in Ventura, California.
