The Race is Heating Up

Top teams head into the jungle on mountain bikes, while the back of the pack still paddles and swims.



Day 2 of Eco-Challenge Sabah 2000 is already taking its toll on competitors, and the race is only in its second day.

After sailing, paddling, swimming and coasteering for 116.5 kilometers, teams are happy to get out of their canoes, drop their paddles, and assemble their mountain bikes. We’ll see just how long that happiness lasts, as the 80-km mountain bike leg takes competitors through dense jungle terrain, leeches and all.

There is no such thing as an easy leg in the Eco-Challenge. Each section proves more challenging than the last, with fatigue and injury becoming an increasing and unavoidable threat.

The top teams have passed through the canoe-to-bike transition at Camp 1, and competition is fierce. Team AussieSpirit.com holds the lead, with a handful of teams making a run for the front of the pack while the rest of the field fights their own battles. Some teams are still on the water, making their way to Camp 1/PC 12. You can bet that every team is feeling the pain.
