Protected within Zion National Park's 229 square miles (593.1 km) is a spectacular cliff-and-canyon landscape and wilderness full of the unexpected including the world's largest arch - Kolob Arch - with a span that measures 310 feet (94.5 m). Wildlife such as mule deer, golden eagles and mountain lions also inhabit the Park. Mukuntuweap National Monument proclaimed July 31, 1909; incorporated in Zion National Monument March 18, 1918; established as national park Nov. 19, 1919.

Directions:
The Visitor Center at Kolob Canyons is accessible via Exit 40 from I-15. I-15 passes west of the Park and connects with UT-9 and 17 to the Park US-89 passes east and connects with UT-9 to the Park. The Zion Canyon Visitor Center is a short distance from the Park's South Entrance adjacent to Springdale. The closest airport is in St. George, UT, 46 miles (74.1 km).

Reservations/Permits/Fees

Permits:
The entrance fee is $10 per vehicle or $3 per person entering by bicycle or motorcycle. Commercial tour operators fee is based on bus capacity and ranges from $25 to $100. … There are size restrictions on vehicles traveling through the 1.1-mile (1.7 km) tunnel on the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway. The tunnel height at the east entrance is 11 feet 4 inches (3.5 m). A $10 fee may be required for escort service through the narrow funnel. Parking of large vehicles is regulated in parts of the Park in the summer. Permits are required for all through Virgin River Narrows hikes. Backcountry permits are required for overnight trips.

Facilities and Opportunities

Accessibility:
The visitor centers and Zion Lodge are accessible. There are accessible camp sites in the South Campground. Many interpretive talks are accessible. The 1-mile (1.6 km) Riverside Walk, which begins at the north end of Zion Canyon Drive, is paved and accessible with assistance. The 2-mile accessible Pairus Trail was opened in 1995.

Camping:
Camp sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis for $8 per night. Stays are limited to 14 days. Zion Lodge is operated by the Utah Parks Division of TWRS Reservations. Cabin and motel accommodations are available through TWRS, 451 North Main St., Cedar City, UT 84720, 303-297-2757. Other overnight accommodations are available in surrounding communities.

Food & Supplies:
Meals are served at Zion Lodge. Food and supplies are available in Springdale.

First Aid/ Hospital:
First aid is available in the Park. … A physician's assistant is available in Springdale in the summer, and a physician is in Hurricane, 24 miles (38 7 km) away. Hospitals are in St. George, 45 miles (72.5 km) away; Cedar City, 60 miles (96.7 km); and Kanab 42 miles (67.7 km).

Visitation

Visitor Activities:
Interpretive films, exhibits and programs (schedules posted throughout the Park), driving, walking and hiking, wading, biking, horseback trips, a 1-hour tram tour of major points of interest in the summer, and wildlife and bird watching. Facilities include visitor centers, a Nature Center for children ages 6 to 12 from Memorial Day to Labor Day, water, fire grates, tables, a sanitary disposal station, telephones, picnic sites and religious services from May to September. The Park is always open. Higher hiking trails are closed by snow in winter.

For your safely - All hikers should take precautions. Obtain detailed information from a Park Ranger before attempting backcountry trails. Do not hike alone. Stay on established trails. Stay out of drainage areas during thunderstorms. Be alert for rockfalls and landslides.
