Occupying 72,500 square kilometers, Sabah accounts for about 22 percent of Malaysia's total area. The South China Sea splits Malaysia into two distinct parts, Peninsular Malaysia and the East Malaysian provinces of Sabah and Sarawak in the northern part of the island of Borneo.
Peninsular Malaysia borders Thailand and Singapore, and the East Malaysian provinces on Borneo border the tiny enclave of Brunei and the Indonesian part of the island, Kalimantan.
