Each Eco-Challenge team is responsible for procuring and transporting their own gear to Sabah, Borneo. Teams must carry some of the gear for the entire race. Other pieces of equipment are only required during particular disciplines and can be picked up at transition check points.

Teams are required to be self sufficient, in doing so, they must carry their own food and find water sources throughout the race. At any time during the competition, race organizers may request equipment inspections. Inadequate or improper supplies can result in disqualification.

The following list is the minimum required equipment to race in the 2000 Eco-Challenge.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT [top]

Personal Mandatory Safety Equipment //

    Each competitor must carry the following equipment at all times during the race and must be prepared to present it to Race Organizers at any time for a mandatory gear check on the race course. This is to ensure each competitor’s safety.

  • 1 Emergency strobe lamp (must be a proper emergency strobe, approximately 1 in. x 4 in. - flashing bike lights not accepted)
  • 1 Headlamp
  • 1 Survival mirror
  • 1 Survival blanket (space blanket)
  • 1 Compass
  • 1 Lighter
  • 1 Knife (with fixed blade or folding blade that locks into place)
  • 1 Whistle
  • 1 Smoke signal (to be distributed at Race Registration in KK)
  • 1 Personal first aid kit
Team Mandatory Safety Equipment //

Teams must be prepared to present it to Race Organizers at any time for a mandatory gear check on the race course. This is to ensure each competitor’s safety.

  • 2 Aerial distress flares (to be distributed at Race Registration in KK)
  • 1 Team First Aid Kit
  • 1 Sealed Emergency Radio (provided by Eco-Challenge)
  • 1 Sealed Emergency GPS (provided by Eco-Challenge)
  • 1 Altimeter
  • Maps (provided by Eco-Challenge)

FIXED ROPES AND CAVING EQUIPMENT [top]

Personal Mandatory Fixed Ropes and Caving Equipment //

    To be carried when required by the Competitor Guidebook:

  • 1 Climbing harness
  • 1 Climbing helmet
  • 1 Pair of leather rappelling gloves
  • 1 Rappel device (NO figure 8 descenders)
  • 1 Automatic Stopping System (Prusik Loop, Petzl STOP, or Petzl Shunt)
  • 2 Handled ascenders
  • 3 Sewn Sling lanyards (approx. 55 - 80 cm diameter - SEWN SLINGS ONLY)
  • 1 Foot loop for ascender
  • 5 Locking Carabiners
  • 1 Disposable surgical mask (air filter protection for nose and mouth)

JUNGLE TREKKING EQUIPMENT [top]

Team Mandatory Jungle Trekking Equipment //

    To be carried when required by the Competitor Guidebook:

  • 1 Parang or machete (minimum blade length: 11 in. or 28 cm.)

MOUNTAIN BIKING EQUIPMENT [top]

Personal Mandatory Mountain Bike Equipment //

    To be carried when required by the Competitor Guidebook:

  • 1 A mountain bike in good condition (no cracks in frames or forks)
  • 1 Hard case bike box (two bikes may be placed in one box)
  • 1 Certified Bike Helmet (only two types of multisport/climbing helmets accepted for bike leg: Petzl Meteor and Grivel Cap - all other climbing helmets NOT acceptable for biking)
  • 1 Front light (can be bright headlamp)
  • 1 Red flashing light attached to the back of the bike

  • 1 Bike computer (kilometers)

WATER EQUIPMENT [top]

Note: You can use the same PFD, paddle, whistle, river knife, length of webbing, dry bag and footwear on both the Perahu Sailing and Sampan Canoeing sections.

Personal Mandatory Perahu Outrigger Sailing Equipment //

    To be carried when required by the Competitor Guidebook:

  • 1 Whitewater Personal Flotation Device (PFD) Type III, V or a minimum buoyancy of 15.5 pounds / 7 kilos
  • 1 Whistle attached to the PFD
  • 1 River knife attached to PFD
  • 1 Canoe paddle
  • 1 Pair of enclosed footwear (must provide sufficient traction/protection for aggressive hiking and be secure enough to remain on your feet while swimming in the ocean)
  • 1 Length of rope or webbing (minimum 3 meters, for securing gear to boat)
  • 1 Sun hat
  • 1 Pair of Sunglasses
Team Mandatory Perahu Outrigger Sailing Equipment //

    To be carried when required by the Competitor Guidebook. These items may be divided up and carried by any team members:

  • 1 Bilge pump or bailer (a cut plastic milk jug or water bottle is acceptable)
  • 8 White or clear glow sticks with attachment devices (6 in. / 12.3 cm or larger)
  • 8 Red glow sticks with attachment devices (6 in. / 12.3 cm or larger)
  • 12 Green glow sticks with attachment devices (6 in. / 12.3 cm or larger)
  • 1 Dry bag (3300 cc or larger) for event-supplied emergency equipment
  • 1 Boat Repair Kit
Personal Mandatory Sampan River Canoeing Equipment //

    To be carried when required by the Competitor Guidebook:

  • 1 Whitewater Personal Flotation Device (PFD) Type III, V or a minimum buoyancy of 15.5 pounds / 7 kilos
  • 1 Whistle attached to the PFD
  • 1 River knife attached to PFD
  • 1 Canoe paddle
  • 1 Pair of enclosed footwear (must provide sufficient traction/protection for aggressive hiking and be secure enough to remain on your feet while swimming in the river)
  • 1 Length of rope or webbing (minimum 3 meters, for securing gear to boat)
Team Mandatory Sampan River Canoeing Equipment //

    To be carried when required by the Competitor Guidebook. These items may be divided up and carried by any team members.

  • 12 Green glow sticks with attachment devices (6 in. / 12.3 cm or larger)
  • 1 Throw bag containing at least 21 meters of 820 kg breaking-strength rope
  • 2 Rescue pulleys
  • 4 Locking carabiners
  • 1 Length of 1 in. tubular webbing (minimum 5 meters)
  • 2 Lengths of 7mm cord (minimum 1 meter)
  • 1 Bilge pump or bailer (a cut plastic milk jug or water bottle is acceptable)
  • 1 Dry bag (3300 cc or larger) for event-supplied emergency equipment
  • 1 Extra Large, durable mesh bag which can hold the entire team’s personal and team mandatory Sampan River Canoeing Equipment.
  • 1 Boat Repair Kit
Personal Mandatory SCUBA Diving Equipment //

    To be carried when required by the Competitor Guidebook. BCD, regulator set and tanks provided by Eco-Challenge.

  • 1 Mask
  • 1 Snorkel
  • 1 Pair of fins
  • 1 Long sleeved Lycra top with elastic closure at neck and wrists (rash guard)
  • 1 Long Lycra pants with elastic closure at waist and ankles
  • 1 Hand-held dive light

FIRST AID KIT [top]

Personal Mandatory First Aid Kit //

    Each competitor must carry the following first aid kit AT ALL TIMES and must be prepared to present it to Race Organizers at any time for a mandatory gear check on the race course. This is to ensure each competitor’s safety.

  • 1 Valid credit card or USD$500 cash or Travelers Checks
  • 10 Blister Dressing sufficient for 10 race days (e.g. Moleskin, Compeed)
  • 1 3 in. x 5 ft. roll of stretch gauze bandage material (e.g. crepe or ACE wrap)
  • 1 3 in. x 5 ft. roll of non-stretch Sports Strapping tape (NOT Duct Tape)
  • 1 2 in x 3 in. non-adherent wound dressing
  • 1 3 in. x 5 in. pressure dressing for heavy bleeding (e.g. Combine Pad)
  • 100 ml Sunscreen (broad spectrum, waterproof, SPF 15+)
  • 100 tabs or 20 ml Water purification tablets or liquid suitable for 100 liters
  • 1 Lip Sunscreen (e.g. Chapstick)
  • 1 Box waterproof matches
  • 10 ml Antiseptic Solution (e.g. Betadine or Iodine)
  • 10 g Antibacterial ointment (e.g. Neosporin)
  • 10 Electrolyte replacement tablets or sachets, minimum sodium content: 400 mg each
  • 10 Anti-diarrhoeal medication (e.g. Lomotil or Immodium)
  • 10 tabs Antihistamine tablets (suggest non-sedating e.g. Claritin)
  • 50 ml or 10g Anti-itch spray, gel or tablets (e.g. Eurax, Calagel)
  • 50 ml, 10g or 10 tabs Anti-inflammatory spray, gel or tablets (e.g. Advil, Tylenol, Aspirin, Paracetamol, Ibuprofen)
  • For those with known medical conditions: appropriate quantities of your required medication
Team Mandatory First Aid Kit //

    Each team must carry the following first aid kit at all times during the race (these items may be divided up and carried by any team members). Teams must be prepared to present it to Race Organizers at any time for a mandatory gear check on the race course. This is to ensure each competitor’s safety.

  • 2 3 in. x 5 ft. roll of stretch gauze bandage material (e.g. crepe or ACE wrap)
  • 2 3 in. x 5 ft. roll non-stretch Sports Strapping tape (NOT Duct Tape)
  • 2 2 in. x 3 in. non-adherent wound dressing
  • 2 3 in. x 5 in. pressure dressing for heavy bleeding (e.g. Combine Pad)
  • 1 Pair of scissors
  • 1 Pair of tweezers

BOAT REPAIR KIT [top]

Team Mandatory Boat Repair Kit //

    To be carried in the Perahu and Sampan boats at all times during the race. Note: epoxy, fiberglass, resin and activator will be supplied by the Ocean Manager, you will pick these up at Registration (do not bring your own). You should bring all other items with you.

  • 1 Instructions
  • 2 114g tubes of underwater epoxy (pick up at Registration)
  • 1 sq. meter Fiberglass material (pick up at Registration)
  • 1 liter Polyester resin (pick up at Registration)
  • 100cc Activator (pick up at Registration)
  • 1 sheet 80 grit sandpaper
  • 1 2 inch wide paintbrush
  • 1 Pair of rubber gloves
  • 1 Pair of scissors
  • 1 Piece of sail patching material (your choice)
  • 15m High strength fishing line (minimum amount)
  • 10m Duct Tape (minimum amount)
  • 25m Light Rope for sail rigging (minimum amount)

CAMPING EQUIPMENT [top]

Team Mandatory Camping Equipment //

    All teams will camp at the starting line the night before the race (it will likely rain) and should the team drop out of the race early, the team will camp at the nearest Camp/Resupply area, potentially until the last day of the race. Each team is required to have the following minimal camping equipment packed in a gear container.

  • 1 or more Tent or combination of light tents to protect all four team members from hard rain, bugs, leeches, etc.
    Note: hammocks are suggested for sleeping in the rainforest however, there are no trees at the starting line campsite to hang hammocks - you must have a tent.
  • 8 Heavy Duty (thick) plastic trash bags
  • 10 to 12 day supply FOOD: you will be responsible for your own food for the entire event. You must have food in your gear containers and if necessary, a means of preparing the food.
