Sport Sandals From Bite & Nike ACG

Bite Trail Lo

For those who love the air (or water) on their feet, the sandal is a great alternative to shoes in many an outdoor situation. From Roman lace-ups to '70s drug store flip-flops, the sandal continues to evolve in many directions - and this new season brings improvements in fit, function and features. Here we look at two different approaches to the sandal (for the same price); one designed for the trail and one at home in the water.

Bite Trail Lo
Upside: Stable.
Downside: Large footprint.

Rating: ^^^^ (4 out of 5 peaks)

Ideal User: Trail hiker who likes the air on his or her toes, camper looking for convenience.

Bite introduced their hiking line of sandals last year, taking on the challenge of overcoming what they refer to as counter-intuitive challenges; providing foot protection and serious stability for hiking. They believe they have succeeded with their trail-specific sandals, and we agree.

We tested the Trail Lo, brother to their other hiking sandal, the Trail Hi. The trail sandals have several features designed for long hikes in the woods - the best of which is their proprietary "Toe Guard," a plastic shield that protects your toes from twigs - or stubbing - on the go.

Other nice features include a tri-density rubber sole called the "Claw," which we found grippy when boulder scrambling, comfortable on pavement, and full of traction on dirt hikes. The sole also cradles your foot from outside rocks and the like - although you're never going to keep random pebbles out of your sandals no matter what.

Bite sandals also feature waterproof leather on the uppers, with stretch neoprene beneath for comfort. Entry and exit is easy with a hook-and-loop heel closure, and nylon adjustable straps keep the sandals tight on your feet up front. Bite's large footprint is great for hiking, but we don't recommend trying to drive a vehicle in these puppies - you may hit more pedals than you want!

We enjoyed our time hiking local trails in these sandals, and also found them to be smart rock climbing approach shoes - easy to slip in and out of between pitches with good traction on boulders. They are also excellent before-and-after mountain biking togs, with plenty of grip for mountain trails.

Nike ACG Air Deschutz Guide
Upside: Light and comfortable.
Downside: Ankle strap.

Rating: ^^^^ (4 out of 5 peaks)

Ideal User: River rat, scuba diver, ocean lover or active person wanting cool tan lines.

Nike ACG Air Deschutz
Named after a river in Oregon, the Air Deschutz Guide is designed as an amphibious attack vehicle - perfect for rafting and coastal boulder scrambling.

Aesthetically pleasing was our black and gray version, this sandal works best in and around the water, yet is very comfortable for just walking around town. The design looks more simple than it is; the clean lines of the inner soul are deceptively comfortable - while the outer sole is very capable.

Vibram technology and Nike design supplies needed grip down below, with a square lug sole pattern providing traction on slippery river rocks and dirt. Up top are quick-drying phylon-backed straps - adjustable for any foot - although we did experience a bit of pinching where the ankle strap met at its buckle.

Overall we found the Air Deschutz Guide adept at myriad water activities, including scuba diving approaches, tidal pool explorations and - of course - clamoring over river rocks. They dried quickly, and the notches on the sides drained water well - and provided comfortable walking pivot points. These are light, comfortable and technically adept sandals for whatever outdoor activities you throw at them.
