ACG Introduces Toketee Mid kayak bootie
created for elite-level kayaking
Friday, August 30, 2002

As Team D athletes Brad Ludden, Ben Selznick and Becky Bristow push the limits of extreme kayaking, they realized that amphibious footwear hasn't kept up with the progression of the sport. Two years ago, Ludden approached ACG designers about creating an elite-level kayaking bootie. Clear on what he wanted, Ludden volunteered to put the product through the world's most extreme real-world testing. Withstand him, and they'd withstand anything.

Essentials
It began with traction. The quest for virgin rapids and monster falls includes long hikes over wet, slimy riverbanks; rocky, technical trails; and even towering vertical rock faces - all with a kayak slung over the shoulder.

Next necessity was protection without bulk. The booties had to be minimal and flexible enough to cram into the front of the playboat, yet protective to cushion where the foot meets the boat wall. This footwear also needed to endure the pounding of a long approach and fit tightly so it wouldn't abandon Ludden should he find himself swimming through a rapid.

Creation
ACG set out to mold his ideas into a tangible kayaking bootie. Every step was done the Nike way: by the athlete, for the athlete. After a year of intense testing and six generations of the shoe, ACG designers, Ludden, Selznick and Bristow finally agreed on the Toketee Mid.

Features
* Four-way stretch Neoprene upper is enclosed by a versatile strap system, with individual adjustments and support for the heel, midfoot and forefoot.

* The middle strap has a surfboard-leash influence and uses low profile, hook Velcro, which stays secure by keeping out sand and riverbed debris.

* Low durometer EVA midsole for comfort and support over technical terrain. The midsole is tapered at the heel and toe to keep it as minimal as possible in the boat.

* Team D tested the wet/dry sticky rubber outsole compound, originally designed for climbing shoes, while repelling into canyons off the coast of Africa. Grips in steep, slimy and wet terrain.

* Drainage ports evacuate water out of the shoe.

SRP $60
