Stretches Performance Apparel Limits
Thursday, April 18, 2002

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Summer in the mountains isn’t a walk in the park when you’re above the treeline or below a storm front. Helly Hansen, the 125-year-old performance apparel maker, expanded its spring/summer 2002 Outdoor collection to arm adventure enthusiasts with all the right clothing for any hot, cold or wet condition. The Outdoor line embraces the latest performance apparel innovations including HELLY TECH® waterproof/breathable fabrics, stretch-woven nylon, Primaloft® and water-resistant zippers. The line is divided into High Alpine, Backcountry and Rainwear categories to address the specific needs of adventurers in specific environments.

  • High Alpine: Fast and light apparel engineered for altitudes above the tree line. Garments are designed to accommodate a backpack, helmet and climbing harness.
  • Backcountry: Outerwear and layering garments that meet the needs of multiple day backpackers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Garments are designed to accommodate a backpack.
  • Rainwear: Waterproof outerwear designed to keep the user dry and comfortable in everything from a drizzle to a downpour.

High Alpine

The Verglas Jacket (retail $300) and Bib ($260) are the top of the mountaineering class with high-end quality and features for a stellar price. Function is everything with this workhorse jacket for cold and high places. At just 25 oz., the Verglas features reinforced stretch panels on the shoulders, forearms, back of hood and lower section, fully taped seams, water-resistant underarm zippers and a fully adjustable hood. The shell is made of best-of-class HELLY TECH® Extreme shell fabric. The lightweight jacket and bib provide versatile coverage for adventurers in fast changing high-alpine conditions.

With its shorter cut, hoodless design and close-to-the-body fit, the Cirrus Jacket ($189) with 650 fill-power goose down is a lighter, more compressible, layering or over-shell piece for summer alpine mountaineering.

Backcountry

Helly Hansen moves the mark in mid-priced lighweight, waterproof, breathable jackets with the introduction of the Taku Jacket, a two-ply lined garment with water-resistant zippers for $200. The zippers are easier to operate and reduce the jacket’s weight to 23 oz. A fully adjustable hood, underarm vents, pocket vents and drop tail are designed to help hikers, backpackers, and backcountry skiers quickly regulate temperature and rain protection on the go. The Taku Pant ($140) with full side zips and high-tenacity ripstop fabric complements the jacket.

The Sequel Jacket ($150) and Pant ($125) are all-purpose, go-anywhere, do-anything backcountry bombers. The HELLY TECH shell keeps the body warm and dry while battling the elements on the outside. Back for another season, the Sequel is known for taking a beating and asking for more. The jacket features a triple-adjustable, stowable hood, a double storm flap, underarm vents, two pocket vents and a drop tail.

The Talus Interactive Fleece Jacket ($90) is a versatile insulation piece for mountain activities from hiking and backpacking to climbing and snowshoeing. Reinforced shoulders reduce wear and tear on the fleece and a utility pocket keeps items handy. The Talus has a classic mountain design made with warm and durable Helly Hansen PROFLEECE®.

Rainwear:

The Packable Jacket ($90) and Pant ($70) are waterproof/breathable and virtually weightless necessities for spring and summer travel. Both are made of lightweight nylon ripstop HELLY TECH® and come with a mesh liner. The jacket stuffs into its own fist-sized Napolean pocket and pant stuffs into its back zipper pocket for simple stowage when the rain valve shuts off.
