Burton Snowdecks Rule Urban Snow Assault in 2002
Blurring the worlds between skateboarding and snowboarding
Thursday, April 18, 2002

There is a new form of snow sliding invading the snow-covered world. From the urban parks of New York City, to the busy snowboarding camps of Mount Hood, snowdecks are blurring the worlds between skateboarding and snowboarding. The snowdeck idea is essentially a snowboard without bindings (or more aptly, a skateboard without wheels for sliding on snow, rails, tables, etc). By elevating this skateboard deck a couple of inches above the snow using a truck system (approximately where you'd expect to find skateboard trucks) a narrow snowboard constructed subdeck is used allowing riders toes and heels to overhang on the top deck. This permits riders to turn and stop almost as confidently as with bindings on a snowboard.

The appeal of snowdecks is not only its technical riding potential, but also its simplicity. We're back to the days when you can ride in your yard, or on a golf course, without having to spend hundreds of dollars on equipment. Snowdecks are also not limited to areas with mountain resorts; one can live in Michigan and have a blast on a snowdeck. All one needs are some snow and imagination and the possibilities are endless.
