Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the habits of bears
in their natural habitat. The more you understand them, the better your chances of
avoiding an encounter. For more information, Stephen Herrero's book, Bear Attacks:
Their Causes and Avoidance is recommended reading. Be prepared for extreme fluctuation in weather conditions and dress accordingly. Allow a few extra days to obtain the backcountry permits you desire. Campsites fill up quickly in the popular summer months. Your best bet is to arrive at one of the ranger stations issuing permits by 8 a.m. between 48 and 72 hours before you plan on entering the backcountry. Respect the wildlife. You are a visitor in their home. DO NOT FEED ANY WILDLIFE. Enjoy! It is truly a stunning place! |
