Mount Rainier Summit Climb
This beautifully sculpted dormant volcano offers one of America's most historic and distinguished climbs. We offer a four-day summit climb via the Emmons Glacier Route. These expeditions combine outstanding glacier training and a summit attempt on the highest and most prominent peak in Washington state.

In '97 and '98 Alpine Ascents led highly successful climbs to the summit of Mt. Rainier via the Emmons Glacier Route. We are looking forward to climbing in '99 and await confirmation from Mount Rainier National Park about dates and Incidental Business Permits.

Climb Itinerary
Day before climb: Gear check at Alpine Ascents' offices.

Day 1: 7:00am meet at White River Campground. We climb to base camp at Glacier Basin. We cover basic snow skills to learn and review proper step kicking, use of ice axe, self-arrest, and rope techniques for our heavily crevassed glacier climb, concentrating on skills necessary for the upcoming summit attempt. On the approach we review correct breathing techniques, route finding and walking on snow and ice. Set camp and enjoy stunning and expansive views.

Day 2: Move to Camp Schurman. We ascend to Camp Schurman (approx. 9500') and rest in the afternoon to prepare for our early morning summit departure.

Day 3: Summit day. For safety and better traveling conditions on the glacier, we begin with an early morning wake-up which should get us very near the summit by sunrise. The summit climb should take between 5-8 hours. Our pace is moderate and leads to a spectacular summit day. Weather permitting, we take a brief break there to enjoy the view, snap photos and eat and drink to fortify ourselves for the descent to Camp Schurman. Day 4: Descend to the trailhead. This climb, via some of the largest and most scenic glaciers in the contiguous US, is conducted by three of our most experienced guides in what will be an unforgettable adventure. Please join us!

Requirements:
This climb is open to advanced beginners. Please note this is an extremely rigorous four days and being in strong physical condition is mandatory. Two days of basic skills review are included in the climb. Please note, the guide retains the right, at any point during the climb, to determine whether a climber is sufficiently fit to continue the climb.

Physical Conditioning:
This climb requires strength and endurance, and we therefore recommend you be in excellent physical condition. Upon registration, we will be happy to assist you in planning your physical preparation.

Tents, Equipment and Meals:
Provided: All group climbing equipment: climbing ropes and technical hardware; meals and tents.
Not provided: Personal equipment You are responsible for all items on gear list. (Click here to see the gear list.)

Note: If you are a beginning climber, we strongly advise renting as much gear as possible. Specialty outdoor equipment can be quite expensive. Alpine Ascents and other local retailers provide quality rental equipment at reasonable prices. Other personal items are available through local outdoor stores. Rental supply is limited for the 4-day climb.

Additional information will be sent upon receipt of Alpine Ascents International application.

Student Comments
The program was very well put together. I always felt like the purpose of the program was for my benefit. I never felt like a product. The respect for the mountain environment was comforting. I learned a lot and was impressed with the guides' genuine joy at the summit of Rainier. I would not have been surprised had they been blase, given their experience, but they seemed as fulfilled as the clients. —John S.

My experience was amazing. It was a priceless experience that has given me all I hoped for and more. —Freda F.
