Day 9 // Features // Team Hi-Tec Finishes 10th // 1 of 1

Team Hi-Tec endured sickness, dehydration, foot problems, and the arduous course to finish 10th place at the Eco-Challenge Sabah 2000. Battle-weary and grimy, with team member Jacques Boutet barely able to walk, they arrived in Semporna last night to hoots and cheers of onlookers and friends. As Boutet got out of the Perahu canoe, he whispered to Medical Director Adrian Cohen, "My feet are just shot."

Karen Lundren, appearing gaunt but still plucky, agreed. "Jacques is so tough. He'll probably be in the medical tent for a couple of hours."

Captain David Kelly, a finisher of every Eco-Challenge since Utah, worked through serious illness early in the race and managed to once again arrive at the finish, despite mishaps and hardships. He told Mark Burnett, "This could be the toughest course yet."

Terry Schneider, one of the two women on the team, agreed, "The terrain, the weather, the bugs, the jungle, it all plays with your head. And there was so much paddling. If you weren't prepared for it, the course was mentally very difficult."

Assisted by his teammates and by medical staff, Jacques Boutet shuffled along the dock, then looked back to Mark Burnett: "Thanks Mark, for pushing the boundaries one more notch."
