The crowd, including several injured competitors and the four-person medical staff immediately stopped what they were doing and turned towards the competitor in silence, in awe, and in sympathy.
"Ooooooohhh!" said the crowd in unison, at complete attention.
"You're famous," said one of his teammates.
The night before, race radios had lit up with the news that a certain competitor had a leech stuck in an uncomfortable place. Not just any ordinary leech. And not just any ordinary uncomfortable place. No sir. This particular leech had managed to work its way into a place so horrific, it's difficult to write about.
I'll leave the details up to your imagination. But you can bet that the next time this unnamed competitor goes into the jungle, he'll be wearing a third leech sock.
Endnote: the leech eventually crawled out on it's own accord. The unnamed -- and unlucky -- competitor is doing fine.
