It had been a rough night. After sleeping alongside the river, Hiroki Ishikawa painfully injured his leg on an underwater rock a few kilometers before the checkpoint. In agony, he struggled, nearly floating past the muddy beach.
"He hit his leg in the water,"
explained Masayuki Takahata, 26.
