That "something" is the cutoff time. Teams falling too far back now face the threat of disqualification.
Time-based disqualification has been an understood factor from the beginning but is now being enforced.
Cutoff times are used as a safety regulation to keep teams from becoming too widely dispersed. Rescue support must be readily available to all teams at all times, but can best function in a concentrated area.
The cutoff time is also used to encourage slower teams to pick up the pace. This regulation is in the racers' best interest, but it is very real and unforgiving. A number of teams have already fallen victim to it, and as the front teams pull further and further ahead, more are sure to find themselves out of the race.
