Puzzled
After a couple of days in Paradise Harbour we paddled out Ferguson Channel to the Puzzle Islands yesterday, northeast of the spectacular Cape Renaud. A forty-knot blow came up as we were setting up camp. The Puzzle islands are either low and flat or steep and bordered by ice-cliffs. As there was no room for a tent, we bivied in the open, which was comfortable enough, and we spent the evening wondering (OK, puzzling... sorry!) over why anyone would recommend this place for a campsite.
Today the wind was up early but dropped away later, leaving us with great conditions to paddle through the Lemaire Channel. Plenty of steep, spectacular mountains here, and in fact we ran into the 'Northanger', an expedition support yacht with a Kiwi climbing party on board, doing a few good things in the area.
Right now we are camped on Petermann Island, at the northern end of the Penola Strait. The Penola Strait is named after John Rymill's boat, from the 1934-37 British Graham Land Expedition.
South from here we really start to get to the business end of this expedition. The big question is around the sea ice conditions in Crystal Sound and through the Gullet, the narrow channel between Adelaide Island and the mainland. The really difficult stuff is still a few days paddle to the south. Here's hoping that the cards fall our way and we can get through!
