A Bit Further!
We didn't get as far as we hoped today as a little Antarctic breeze came in. We reached Cape Evenson after about 21km of paddling and had a quick brew before pushing on. As we started thecrossing to Cape Bellue the wind hit 40 knots straight off the land. No fun at all, so we retreated with tail between legs. However we have a great campsite here, a nice flat rock shelf right up high with an awesome view. This makes up for the difficult, boat-breaking landing that we had to deal with. There was a strong surge with big blocks of brash ice amongst it making for a very awkward/dangerous landing, but thankfully we reached solid ground unscathed.
We had a nice surprise last night when Gages strolled into camp. He'd managed to hitch a lift to Prospect Point and then found our camp a few km away in the Fish Islands. After five days of rest he reckons his elbow is OK now so he will join us again for the paddle across the Antarctic Circle and beyond.
