JAKE NORTON

[GO TO THE INTERVIEW WITH JAKE]

Jake Norton

Jake Norton began climbing at age 12 when he summitted Mount Rainier (14,411 feet) with his father. Climbing soon developed into a passion for him, and by his senior year at high school, in New Hampshire, he had climbed throughout the United States, Europe (he climbed Mont Blanc at 13), and in the Himalaya. Jake is a guide with Mountain Link and leads this ski mountaineering expedition.

His first journey to Nepal opened up another door in his life as he immediately became inspired by the people of the Himalaya. He spent a semester studying there during his sophomore year in college and returned during his senior year to write his thesis, Newar Buddhism in Bhaktapur: Eleventh Century India in Contemporary Nepal.

His first trip to Peru was with his father in June of 1996. He had been to the Himalaya many times before, but didn't know what to expect with Peru. "I was just immediately turned on by it," he says. "The people were wonderful and very similar in a lot of ways to the people in the Himalaya, and the mountains were just spectacular. I was amazed at how jagged they are, and at the same time how accessible they are."

Since then, he has returned twice to guide peaks including Urus, Ishinca, Chopicalqui and Huascarán. Since graduating from Colorado College in 1996, Jake has traveled to Kangguru, and he was a climbing member of the 1999 Mallory & Irvine Research Expedition to Everest.

Jake works as a guide and professional photographer. See his images from Peru in the photo gallery.
